03 January 2008: WW(T)JD?

"Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."
Thomas Jefferson

December, 2007: On the Basis of Freedom - Civil Discourse

Another annoying movie star stumping for his candidate? Not quite. This is an inspirational diatribe from Richard Dreyfuss (yeah, the Jaws guy) about the importance of teaching civics as a basis for involving citizens in the process of government (getting people to vote, for example).

The central point is this:

Democracy...use it or lose it.

And I could not agree more.

December, 2007: Schoolhouse Rock: No More Kings

Just an innocent little reminder of how our nation came to be. What would become America was founded by people who were devoutly religious and loyal to a king. Yes...but they never would have risked their lives to come here had it not been for the promise of personal liberty, to live and worship as one sees fit. Faith and liberty in balance, not in opposition. Ah, those nutty Pilgrims!

Ideal society? Not by a long shot...but a worthy ideal .
